Mark W. Lindsay, CPA, JD
Mark W. Lindsay’s extensive education commenced at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Mark proceeded with his education at the California Western School of Law, where in 1976 he earned the professional degree of Juris Doctor, and was chosen for the honor of Law Review. Mark then attended San Diego State University, acquiring a Masters of Accountancy, focusing in Taxation, in 1980.
Mark invested ten years at one of the international CPA firms, Deloitte, from 1982 to 1992. After this period of working as a Senior Tax Manager at Deloitte, Mark partnered with fellow colleague Stephen Brownell to found their own accounting firm, Lindsay & Brownell, LLP in 1992.
Along with attaining extensive work experience and establishing his own firm, Mark also dedicated eight years serving as a lecturer in tax and accounting at San Diego State University.
Mark lends his knowledge and experience by being involved with various local organizations. Mark currently, is an active member of the YMCA of San Diego County Gift Planning Advisors Council as well as the finance council of the Diocese of San Diego. Formerly, Mark was chairman of the board representing the American Lung Association of San Diego as well as the Lamb’s Players Theater Endowment Trust, sat on the Sharp Coronado Hospital Board of Directors, was on the committee for the Scripps Foundation of Planned Giving and has held the position of executive director for the San Diego County Bar Foundation.
Stephen J. Brownell, CPA
Stephen J. Brownell began his higher education at the University of California, Davis where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1982. Steve continued on to San Diego State University where he attained a Masters of Accountancy, specializing in Taxation, in 1985.
Upon graduation from San Diego State University in 1985, Steve started his career in San Diego at the international CPA firm, Deloitte, where he held the position of tax manager. In 1992 Steve partnered with colleague Mark Lindsay to establish Lindsay & Brownell, LLP.
In addition to being a founding partner of Lindsay & Brownell, LLP, Steve is a contributing author to the Bureau of National Affairs’ Tax Practice Series and has served as a lecturer in tax and accounting at local educational institutions such as San Diego State University, Southwestern and Grossmont colleges.
Steve’s contributions and involvement extend beyond the firm. Steve has taken an active role within the community and has volunteered his time serving on a variety of organizations’ boards. Currently, Steve is a member of the board of management of the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA, serving on the executive and master site development committees and is a past board chair. He is also a member of the San Diego State University School of Accountancy Advisory Board. Steve has also served on the board of the Encinitas National Little League, was a member of the San Diego Zoological Society's President's Pride advisory board and a member of the planned giving executive committee at University of California, San Diego.
Lisa M. Betyar, CPA
Lisa M. Betyar obtained both her undergraduate and graduate education degrees from the University of San Diego; she acquired her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting in 1987, and continued on to attain a Masters of Science, concentrating in Taxation, in 1989.
Lisa dedicated five years as a Tax Consultant, from 1988 to 1993, with the international CPA firm, Deloitte. In 1993, Lisa joined Mark Lindsay and Stephen Brownell to become the third partner of Lindsay & Brownell, LLP.
Lisa donates her time and expertise by being involved in multiple organizations throughout San Diego County. For many years, Lisa has donated her time to the St. Germaine's Children's Charity, a La Jolla based non-profit organization for child abuse prevention, serving as treasurer for 10 years, and currently is a member. Presently, she is a member of the Children's Hospital Trusts and Estate Committee. She also serves as the CFO for Las Patronas, a charitable organization in La Jolla.
Lisa is a director and board member of the Seacoast Commerce Bank. Currently Lisa is the chair of the San Diego Yacht Club Finance. Additionally, Lisa is a member of the board of directors for the Walden Family Services Organization. Previously, Lisa volunteered as the sorority chapter advisor to Gamma Phi Beta at the University of San Diego.
Mary H. McGroarty, CPA
Mary H. McGroarty began her expansive education background at the University of San Diego where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts in 1989. She continued on to get her Masters in Education in Counseling and Student Services, from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1997. In the fall of 2007, Mary completed her degree from San Diego State University, graduating with a Masters of Science in Taxation.
Before her career in public accounting, Mary accumulated an array of experiences. Mary spent two years in Rome, Italy serving as a boarding supervisor at the Marymount International School. She worked as a housing director at the EF International School in San Diego and as a school administrator at Aspect International Language School in La Jolla. In 1999, Mary began her career at Lindsay & Brownell with the position of staff accountant. From there Mary progressed from staff accountant to management; and in the beginning of 2012, Mary became partner in the firm.
Beyond the firm, Mary has previously served on the advisory board for Blue Ryno Foundation, and is currently involved with the Rwandan Orphans Project and the Center for Sustainable Energy.
Jeffrey S. Ackley, CPA
Jeffrey S. Ackley attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison from 1981 to 1985 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.
Jeff offers a variety of experience within the accounting field. In 1985 Jeff began his career working for Ernst & Young; he spent two years within the audit department before he was promoted to senior, and spent another two years working in tax. From there, Jeff proceeded to become the tax manager and audit coordinator at a manufacturing company in Wisconsin. Concurrently, Jeff spent two years teaching accounting and finance classes at Milwaukee area community colleges. In 1991, Jeff founded his own accounting practice, Ackley & Associates, CPAs. Relocating to California, Jeff began his career at Lindsay & Brownell, LLP in 2005. After dedicating seven years as a senior tax manager, Jeff became a partner within the firm in 2012.
Outside of Lindsay & Brownell, Jeff holds the position of treasurer for the San Diego Air & Space Museum and currently serves on the Scripps Health Foundation Gift Planning Advisory Board.
Kristina M. Yanover, CPA
Kristi M. Yanover attended the University of San Diego from 1993 to 1997 where she graduated with a Bachelor of Accountancy.
Kristi began her career in accounting as a staff auditor at Ernst & Young. She worked in their audit department for three years and earned the title of audit senior. Kristi decided to expand her accounting career and accepted a tax accountant position with Lindsay & Brownell, LLP in 2000. Kristi’s tax experience focused on entities, trusts, and nonprofit organizations. In 2003 she was promoted to manager and her focus shifted back to audit. Kristi was instrumental in developing our audit practice and in 2014, she was promoted to audit partner, and is now the lead in the firm's accounting and auditing department.
Kristi has been actively involved in recruiting at the local universities and stays connected with her alma mater by participating in alumni events and speaking opportunities.
Outside of the firm Kristi enjoys being a wife and mother of two young girls. She sits on the Board of the Angels Foster Family Network and she also holds the position of Treasurer for her family’s charity, the Chad Zeller Memorial Fund, which promotes bicycle safety and awareness, and has sat on the Board since its inception.
Michelle A. Myhra, CPA
Michelle attended California State University, Chico from 1994 to 1998 where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with an option in Accounting.
After her first year in public accounting at a local San Diego firm, Michelle moved to Florence, Italy. She immersed in the language and culture while working at an American study abroad program. Michelle returned to San Diego in February of 2002 and began as a staff accountant at Lindsay & Brownell. Michelle has developed a deep expertise in the taxation of high net worth individuals and is a leader in the firm’s practice group. Her dedication to client service and technical expertise has culminated in a promotion to partner at the beginning of 2014.
Outside of Lindsay & Brownell, Michelle enjoys quality time with her husband and two young daughters, volunteering at St. Michael’s School in Poway, and holds the position of treasurer for Girl Scout Troops 2174 and 2145. She also serves the San Diego Children’s Choir as the board treasurer.
